Insurance Premium Forgiveness for Cancer Patients

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Health Insurance exists to help people when they become ill. Unfortunately, many people are finding that their policies are being cancelled when they are diagnosed with a serious illness, such as cancer.

In many cases, people with cancer may find themselves unable to work. As a result, insurance companies are canceling their policies. Without insurance coverage, there is small hope that cancer patients will be able to afford the treatment needed to defeat their disease.

If Your Insurance is Cancelled

If you are facing cancer treatment without medical insurance, discuss any cost-related worries with your doctor, the hospital social worker, and the hospital’s business office before you start treatment. They doctor may be able to recommend alternative treatments, the social worker can lead you to outside resources to help with payment, and the business office can set up a plot to work with you.

Maintaining Health Insurance During Cancer Treatments

The following tips can help you to maintain health insurance while undergoing treatment for cancer:
Consider health insurance alternatives before you start treatment (e.g., switching to your spouse’s policy).
Do NOT quit your job until you have located an affordable insurance company that covers people with pre-existing conditions.
Some plans only cover pre-existing conditions after 12 months of coverage. Read the fine print, and make sure your ancient coverage doesn’t lapse before the new coverage goes into effect.

Getting Your Insurance Company to Pay for Your Cancer Treatments

The following tips will help you get the most from your insurance coverage:
Obtain a copy of your insurance policy prior to treatment and find out exactly what your coverage includes.
Keep careful records of all your covered expenses and claims.
File claims for all covered costs.
Get help in filing a claim if you need it. If friends or family can’t help, question a social worker.
If your claim is denied, find out why and file your claim again. Question your doctor to clarify to the company why the services meet the requirements for coverage under your policy. If you are turned down again, find out if the company has an appeals process.
If you believe your claim has been unjustly denied, file an appeal.

Lobbying for Change

Health Insurances companies should be more sensitive to the delicate, and sometimes dire situations of cancer patients. If you feel that your insurance company has treated you unfairly, call your state insurance commissioner. If your policy was cancelled, write a letter to your Congressman asking for help with enacting legislation that would force insurance companies to offer insurance premium forgiveness to cancer patients. Help place an end to unacceptable insurance practices.

Penile cancer is a very rare form of cancer that occurs mostly in uncircumcised men (men with the foreskin, a piece of skin covering the head of their penis, intact). The penis is the external male genital organ, and consists of three chambers of spongy tissue that contain multiple blood vessels, nerves, and smooth muscle. The corpora cavernosa make up two of the chambers, and are located on both sides of the upper part of the penis. The corpus spongiosum is located below the corpora cavernosa and surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine and semen exit the body at an opening called the meatus. At the tip of the penis, the corpora cavernosa expands to form the helmet, or glans. Number of international patients had got excellent results after having their penile cancer surgery in India.

The causes of penile cancer

The majority of penile cancers develop from flat, scale-like skin cells called squamous cells. Like most other forms of nonmelanoma skin cancer, these tumors tend to grow slowly and are usually preceded by precancerous changes that may last for several years. When detected in the early stages, these tumors can usually be cured. Squamous cell penile cancers can develop anywhere on the organ, but most develop on the foreskin (in men who have not been circumcised) or on the glands. A very rare type of penile cancer called adenocarcinoma can develop in thee sweat glands in the skin of the penis, while another small percentage of penile cancer can develop from melanoma. Melanomas are considered more perilous because they grow and spread more quickly. Usually melanomas develop on sun-exposed areas of the skin, though occasionally they develop on other areas not likely to be sunburned. The remaining cases of penile cancers develop from the blood vessels, smooth muscle and other connective tissues of the penis.

The symptoms of penile cancer

The most common symptom of penile cancer is a tender spot or an open sore at the tip of the penis. If left untreated, it will spread slowly across the skin and invade deeper layers of tissue. Pain and bleeding may develop as the cancer continues to grow. Penile cancer can spread into the lymph nodes and through the lymphatic (infection-fighting) system, spreading to the groin and other parts of the body.

Self-care tips

If detected early, cure rates for penile cancer are high. Patients should look for abnormal growths that resemble warts or irritated patches of skin that develop on the head of the penis or foreskin. Often these growths are benign (not cancerous), but may evolve into penile cancer is left untreated.

6 Tips About Preventing Prostrate Cancer

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Did you know, that in the United States alone, it is estimated that more than twenty eight thousand men die from prostrate cancer yearly? But, thanks to early detection, most men that are diagnosed with this type malignancy have a survival rate of nearly ninety eight percent. The tips in this article may help increase the survival odds for you.

Although prostrate cancer can occur in men under the age of fifty it is extremely rare. When it does occur under age 50 some doctors feel it may be related to DNA genes from the family or an abnormal problem with the testosterone hormone. Just because it is a rare occurrence in men under 50, this doesn’t mean that you can’t start preparing yourself to fight off prostrate illness early in your life.

One of the most vital steps you can take to help prevent cancer, prostrate or otherwise, is to do your best to have a healthy lifestyle. One of the major lifestyle changes you can do is to stop smoking, if you smoke. Recent studies have not found a direct link from smoking to prostrate cancer; but it is believed it can have adverse affect on the DNA of the malignant growth causing it to spread more rapidly through the prostrate and into other parts of the body. (Journal of Urology (Vol. 169: 512-516).

Not only can smoking speed up the spread of cancer cells throughout your body it also causes major hurt to your entire respiratory system. This can lead to problems with your immune system, which is a major contributor for preventing any disease, much less cancer.

Other studies have shown that a healthy diet can also decrease the odds of the early on set of cancer of the prostrate and its severity. Those diets, which are high in fiber and the natural vitamins required by your body, have been shown to be very helpful. Furthermore your natural defenses are increased with this type of diet.

When you are discussing dieting you are invariably led to the subject of exercise. Some of the other studies have shown that a sedate life style leads to a lowering of the body’s natural defense system. Exercise has been shown to help the immune system to work at top proficiency. So not only will you help your prostrate, but again lower the odds of contracting other life threatening diseases. This in turn brings us to one more tip that may be helpful for you.

Early detection is the absolute key to increasing the survival rate for cancer victims, prostrate or otherwise. One of the recommendations being touted is to have the first PSA sample taken around age 40. But, there is a excellent deal of controversy over this recommendation. Thos against it have stated that it will be too early to show any results. While those for it have said it will give a record for comparison as the person ages.

Now we need to give you another tip. No matter which camp your doctor is in it is vital for you to discuss your concerns with your physician. The tips provided in this article on prostrate cancer are for information purposes only. They should not be taken as nor considered as medical advice.

Although prostrate cancer can be a life threatening disease, with the proper medical treatment and lifestyle changes, the chances of prostrate cancer being the actual cause of your death are small.

Top 7 Tips to Treat and Prevent Cancer Pain

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Treating cancer pain depends on a variety of factors such as the type of cancer you have, the extent of the disease, and your individual tolerance for pain. But while the source of the pain can vary, one thing is for certain. Most of the time, it can be controlled. Cancer pain can stem from physical factors such as a tumor pressing on nerves or bone or from side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy. It may also be aggravated by anxiety or depression. The pain can be chronic or acute. To conquer the pain, here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to manage the pain effectively.

1. Heal Your Veins

To help ease tenderness and swelling caused by repeated injections. Apply aloe vera straight from the plant, if possible to the injection sites. Or make a paste of goldenseal powder and water and pack it onto the affected areas before you go to sleep, leaving it on all night. Both treatments can help soothe the pain.

2. Try Hypnosis

Hypnosis has long been known to control pain. Hypnosis can help you dissociate from the pain. It is like turning down the dial from 10 to 2. You can find a qualified hypnotherapist through the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis.

3. Honor Your Emotions

Anxiety, depression, worry, dread, all of these emotions can influence how much pain affects you. Recognize that these emotions play a role in the perception of pain and, if necessary, question your doctor to refer you to a psychotherapist or counselor. You may also opt to join a cancer support camp.

4. Learn to Relax

Stress-management techniques such as visualization and meditation may help reduce the sensation of pain. The most basic relaxation technique is to sit quietly and focus on your breathing for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Or question your doctor or nurse to recommend a relaxation audiotape.

5. Take A Stroll

Walk regularly, if possible. Even taking a brief walk around your room can improve your circulation and help your body metabolize pain medication, thereby controlling any side effects.

6. Get A Massage

Massage can help reduce emotional stress and thereby lessen your perception of pain. Massage can also relieve tight, tense muscles and help maintain your flexibility and range of motion.

7. Exercise, If You Can

Even gentle exercises can help release endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers. Get whatever exercise you can, within reason.

5 Tips for Cancer Free Safe Grilling

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

For years there has been a controversy whether grilled meats cause cancer . A few research studies have found that grilling and broiling cause meats (red meat, poultry and fish included ) to produce cancer-causing compounds. These compounds known as HCAs (heterocyclic amines), have been shown to cause tumors in animals and possibly increase the risk of cancers of the breast, colon, stomach and prostate in humans. This was confirmed officially by The National Institute of Health, Dept. of Health and Human Services in January 2005 when it added heterocyclic amines in it’s hit list of cancer causing agents.

Does this mean grilling is a huge no ? Not always. Large doses of meat especially red meat has never been recommended by doctors. According to most researchers, grilled vegetables and fruits, burnt toast and dishes in which only the seasoning

is charred present a substantially lower risk of cancer. You can still eat meat but make sure to eat it in moderation. Below are 7 tips you can implement straight away to make your grilling safer and free from cancer causing agents.

1. A excellent thought is to grill vegetables instead of meat always. Try grilling marinated vegetables on skewers, a grilling tray or wrapped in foil. Other healthy barbecue choices are veggie burgers, tofu or quesadillas and even tortillas.

2. Marinating meats before grilling may significantly reduce the amount of HCAs. . A marinade is usually acidic and always flavorful. The Acids in marinades do not tenderize meat. But some store bought marinades will tenderize meat because they contain enzymes.

3. One of the most vital tips is to clean your grill thoroughly. Scrape the burned bits off the grates using a grill brush or even a paint scraper. The residue left on the grill often contains high does of HCA’s.

4. PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are cacogenic substances which are formed when stout from meats comes in contact with coal and other hot objects. These chemicals are deposited on your food during flare ups and during evaporation. Avoid letting juices drip into the flames or coals, which causes smoke and flare-ups. Use tongs or a spatula to turn foods, instead of piercing meat with a fork. Covering the grill with punctured aluminum foil, not placing meats directly over coals and keeping a spray bottle of water on hand (to control flare-ups) are other ways to reduce drips.

5. Flip frequently. Recent research has found that cooking hamburger patties at a lower Temperature and turning them often accelerates the cooking process, helps prevent the formation of HCAs and is equally effective in killing bacteria.
