The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or sometimes USEPA) is a federal government agency of the United States charged with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment: air, water and land. The EPA started operation on 2 December 1970.

In June 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, invoked powers granted it in 1980 for the first time and announced a public health emergency. The cause: asbestos and the diseases it has caused in two towns in northwestern Montana. Libby and Troy In Montana, more than 500 people become ill from asbestos-related diseases, including lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer caused by inhaling fibers. The city has been ravaged by Libby asbestos contamination, despite the interventions of today. In the early days, was documented before mesothelioma or asbestos poisoning considered, people were even more significantly affected.
