Lung Cancer Info » Signs http://lung-cancer-info.com Your Online Resource for Lung Cancer Information Fri, 10 Sep 2010 14:35:04 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.0.1 Early Symptoms Of Lung Cancer Should Be Taken Seriously http://lung-cancer-info.com/early-symptoms-of-lung-cancer-should-be-taken-seriously/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/early-symptoms-of-lung-cancer-should-be-taken-seriously/#comments Wed, 28 Apr 2010 18:01:12 +0000 http://lung-cancer-info.com/early-symptoms-of-lung-cancer-should-be-taken-seriously/

If you have any risk factors for lungcancer and start noticing any symptoms that make you ill at ease, it would be a excellent thought to talk to your family doctor. the number one risk factor for lung cancer is cigarette smoking.

Other risk factors include smoking cigars or marijuana, having exposure to asbestos, talc or other minerals, and having a family history of pulmonary disease.

The earlier cancers are detected, the more curable it is. if you have any of those risk factors, it should be very vital for you to be able to recognize the early symptoms of lung cancer so that your doctor would be able to start treatment as soon as possible.

The most common early symptoms of lung cancer include shortness of breath and a cough that persists or becomes more intense. if any cough last more than two weeks you should contact your doctor. Increases of sputum, a change in the color of the sputum, or couching up blood are all very serious signs as well. Walking unsteadily and memory loss can be vital systems that are often missed until they have reached serious levels.

Some less common early symptoms of lung cancer that can cause issues that don’t immediately lead to the detection of the cancer – include asthma kind of fatigue, loss of energy, aching joints, headaches, and even unexplained weight loss. if these symptoms persist for any amount of time, a doctor’s visit is imperative.

Whatever your symptoms, it is vital that you listen to what your body is telling you. Ignoring aches and pains until they are unbearable can cause more problems than you can deal with. Putting off a visit to the doctor or having a check-up or test taken care of can cost you more than you reckon. In the case of lung cancer, late detection could cost you your life. Getting the diagnosis of any disease, be it lung related or not, at an earliest possible stage, radically increase the effects of any treatment and therefore the chances of a positive outcome.

If the diagnosis is lung cancer the treatment of the lungs will commonly be surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy or a combination of these. a side note: the lung is a common place for metastasis from tumors in other parts of the body. these cancers are identified by the site of origin, thus a breast cancer metastasis to the lung is still known as breast cancer.

If you are smoking and find you have some of these lung cancer symptoms, or even if you don’t yet have any symptoms, it is in your best interests to find quit smoking help. if you stop smoking now, you can improve your chances of being cancer free dramatically. the sooner you do this, the better you will be.

Squamous Cell Lung Cancer http://lung-cancer-info.com/squamous-cell-lung-cancer/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/squamous-cell-lung-cancer/#comments Sat, 24 Apr 2010 10:00:37 +0000 http://lung-cancer-info.com/squamous-cell-lung-cancer/ Cancer is defined as an abnormal cell growth or a disruption the normal division and growth of cells. The aberant cell growth leads to the formation of masses or tumors which can be benign, in which case they are harmless, ot they can be malignant and invasive. In the lungs there can be 2 types of cancer depending on the appearance of malignant cells, non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. about 80% of lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancers and of those 30% are squamous cell lung cancers.

Squamous cell lung cancers begin in the bronchial tubes and they usually show signs such as coughing up blood early on. there has been a decrease in the number of cases of this type of cancer, which has been attributed to the introduction of filtered cigarettes. If learned in the early stages this type of cancer can be removed through surgery. even when tumors are successfully removed through surgery the risk remains; there is a possibility that cancer may return.

It is possible that cancer cells remain behind the surgery; doctors try to prevent this by also removing healthy tissue from around the tumor or by recommending chemotherapy after surgery. also it is possible for malignant cell to spread to the tissues of other neighboring organs or to travel through the lympahtic or blood system ta another, more distant part of the body. When this has happened the cancer becomes more hard to treat, because therapies recommended have to be able to focus on several tumors, possibly even in several areas of the body. at the advanced stages the treatments no longer focus on healing but on alleviating symptoms.

Squamous cell lung cancers usually grow quicly and spread into surrounding tissues. If it spreads throught eh blood system tumors may apear in oragns like the liver, the adrenal glands, in the bones, as well as in the brain. Spreading to those organs may cause additional unpleasant symptoms, such as pain in the bones. If cancer has metastasied to the brain symptoms like difficulty with vision, weakness, headaches or seizures may occur.

Accurately diagnosing lung cancer is extremely vital, because treatment options will differ greatly from one stage to another. also knowing as much as possible about your illness is very vital. Knowing the appropriate information can help you help yourself and your doctor when making his decisions. also knowing the appropriate information is also vital for your family, so that they know what to expect and how to give you the best care they can. Setting appropriate expectations is vital especially in the later stages of lung cancer. Discussing expectations will be hard which is why support groups can prove to be very helpful for many cases.

Lung cancer – Mesothelioma? Do you know much about it? http://lung-cancer-info.com/lung-cancer-mesothelioma-do-you-know-much-about-it/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/lung-cancer-mesothelioma-do-you-know-much-about-it/#comments Sat, 17 Apr 2010 22:00:15 +0000 http://lung-cancer-info.com/lung-cancer-mesothelioma-do-you-know-much-about-it/ I have been lucky, and have not had to deal with the nastiness of cancer. my grandpa has Mesothelioma, the cancer from asbestos. he has been in Stage 4 for the past 3 years and has defied all of the odds. they originally only gave him a couple months to a year to live, but Chemo has worked wonders. he just had a scan and the results showed it has increased in size significantly, so the last round of Chemo didn’t work. This has caused his ability to breathe to decrease, and the changed his Chemo. he had his treatment with the new stuff on Friday, and they rushed him to the hospital today because of his inability to breathe.

My question is are these signs of the beginning of the end? I know this form of cancer will eventually suffocate him, and he does have a living will, so oxygen is the only form of help he will receive. how long will oxygen help? I am very saddened by all of this and would hate to see him suffer for long like this. he is a excellent man and doesn’t deserve to die like this. do your organs shut down due to lack of oxygen? anyone with experience with Mesothelioma or that knows about this and can give me some insight, I’d appreciate any details no matter how graphic. I just want to know what to expect.
Don’t go into all of the herbs and stuff you can take to beat cancer. We know he is dying and cannot beat this. I really appreciate the thought though.
I know they cannot tell us when he will die, but I feel so helpless. thanks for the link, but I have read everything out there about this and really was hoping to find someone who knows about this type of cancer first hand.

How Cigarette Smoke Causes Cancer…… http://lung-cancer-info.com/how-cigarette-smoke-causes-cancer/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/how-cigarette-smoke-causes-cancer/#comments Fri, 02 Apr 2010 07:30:24 +0000 http://lung-cancer-info.com/how-cigarette-smoke-causes-cancer/

ScienceDaily (Mar. 1, 2008) — Everyone has known for decades that that smoking can kill, but until now no one really understood how cigarette smoke causes healthy lung cells to become cancerous. Researchers from the University of California, Davis, show that hydrogen peroxide (or similar oxidants) in cigarette smoke is the culprit. This finding may help the tobacco industry develop “safer” cigarettes by eliminating such substances in the smoke, while giving medical researchers a new avenue to developing lung cancer treatments.

“With the five-year survival rate for people with lung cancer at a dismally low 15.5 percent, we hope this study will provide better insight into the identification of new therapeutic targets,” said Tzipora Goldkorn, senior author of the report.

In the research study, Goldkorn and colleagues describe how they exposed different sets of human lung airway cells (in the laboratory) to cigarette smoke and hydrogen peroxide. after exposure, these cells were then incubated for one to two days. then they, along with unexposed airway cells, were assessed for signs of cancer development. the cells exposed to cigarettes smoke and the cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide showed the same molecular signatures of cancer development, while the unexposed cells did not.

“Guns kill, bombs kill and cigarettes kill,” said Gerald Weissmann, MD, Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal.* “While biologists can’t do much about the first two, studies like this will help in the fight against tobacco-related death and disease. these experiments not only pin-point new molecular targets for cancer treatment, but also identify culprits in cigarette smoke that eventually will do the smoker in.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States, resulting in more than 400,000 deaths per year or about 1 in 5 U.S. deaths overall. Smoking accounts for the vast majority of lung cancer deaths, causing 90 percent of all lung cancer deaths in men and about 80 percent in women. In 2000, a Surgeon General report revealed that tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds, with 43 being known carcinogens. Some of the 4,000 compounds result from chemicals added in processing to improve taste, increase burning times, and prolong shelf life.

Adenocarcinoma of the Lung, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment http://lung-cancer-info.com/adenocarcinoma-of-the-lung-symptoms-diagnosis-and-treatment/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/adenocarcinoma-of-the-lung-symptoms-diagnosis-and-treatment/#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 18:11:21 +0000 http://lung-cancer-info.com/adenocarcinoma-of-the-lung-symptoms-diagnosis-and-treatment/

Adenocarcinoma of the lung is a form of lung cancer and is one of the most common forms of lung cancers that will affect adults.

To give it a broad classification it can go into 2 types:

  1. SCLC – Small Cell Lung Cancer
  2. NSCLC – Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

NSCLC can be broken down even further into 3 additional variety classifications:

  1. Adenocarcinoma
  2. Squamous Cell
  3. Large Cell

The conceptual difference between the NSCLC and the SCLC is in the approach that is taken towards diagnostics workup and the treatment plotting.

Small cell lung cancer is a type that trends towards wide dissemination when the signs first present themselves. For this reason using chemotherapy is the basis of treatment; however, when it comes to the non small cell lung cancer though it’s often localized to the lung when the cancer is found and for this reason surgical resection, which can be done with or without the use of radiation is the preferred first course of action.

Even though these are both types of lung cancer they are far from the same with each of them having very special characteristics and even their own genetic make-up. Some of the more recent discoveries are giving hope that there will be even more treatment options to improve patient outcome.

Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer and like other cancers it is a growth of abnormal cells. When the abnormal cancerous cells start to multiply out of control they then form a tumor. As the tumor continues to grow it then starts to ruin parts of the lung(s).

Eventually what will happen is that the abnormal cells of the tumor are likely going to spread, or metastasize, to other areas of the body. This isn’t always the case; however, it’s a very likely probability.

Spread is going to include:

  • Local lymph nodes (in the chest and the central part of)
  • Liver
  • Bones
  • Adrenal glands
  • Other organs even possibly the brain

Although there is a lot of worry in regards to spreading the one bit of excellent news is that adenocarcinoma is one of the more likely types of cancer to stay contained to one area of the body. If the cancer should be a truly localized one it is more likely to respond to treatments better than another type of cancer. This is especially true when it comes to surgical removal as well as lymph node drainage.

When it comes to lung cancer adenocarcinoma is the most common types. the majority of people that contract adenocarcinoma are those that smoke; however, it is also the most common form found in those that don’t smoke as well. also for those that are under the age of 45 or a woman.

You’re at a higher risk of adenocarcinoma if you:

  • Smoke cigarettes, 13x more likely than a nonsmoker
  • Breath cigarette smoke
  • Are exposed to asbestos (also increased chance of mesothelioma which is another type of lung cancer)

Also exposure to other workplace carcinogens can increase risk, including:

  • Uranium
  • Vinyl chloride
  • Arsenic
  • Coal products
  • Mustard gas
  • Nickel chromates
  • Gasoline
  • Chloromethyl ethers
  • Diesel exhaust
  • High levels of talc dust

Symptoms

The symptoms of adenocarcinoma are going to be like the other forms of lung cancer and can include:

  • Cough general or coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Breathing discomforts
  • Chest pains
  • Fever
  • Cough producing mucus
  • Problems and discomfort when swallowing
  • Weight loss
  • Poor appetite
  • Hoarseness

If the cancer has begun its spread to the bones, brain or elsewhere the amount of symptoms will likely increase including different types associative with the affected area.

You’ll also notice that some certain types of lung cancer can also cause unusual finger growth which is referred to as clubbing. Basically the outer portions of the fingers are going to look like they are small clubs.

Diagnosis

Your doctor is going to question you a series of questions and just part of it will be if you’re a smoker or have lived with a smoker. should you be a smoker you’ll be asked how long you’ve smoked and how much. You’ll also be asked to recollect the places you might of worked where you’d of been exposed to either asbestos or other carcinogens. Based upon your history your doctor might make an assessment that you likely have a form of lung cancer.

You’ll be examined with special attention being paid to both your lungs and your chest. For confirmation purposes you’ll receive a chest x-ray. the chest x-ray is going to show if there are any masses. If there are those masses could be cancer.

If there is anything suspicious shown on the x-ray your doctor will order a CT scan. the CT scan is what will confirm both the size and the locations of any masses or tumors.

There will be additional testing done to confirm the diagnosis as well as to establish the specific type of lung cancer that you have and in addition how far that cancer has spread.

Treatment

If the cancer is shown that it hasn’t spread to outside areas of the body surgery is one of the most likely options. the surgery could be to just remove part of the lung which is a wedge resection, a lobectomy which is the removal of an entire lob of the lung or a pneumonectomy which is the removal of the entire lung.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are likelihoods before and/or after surgery. This depends on the stage of the cancer and also how far the cancer has spread.

For someone that has a medical problem that would make it very hard to go through surgery they will likely receive radiation treatments to shrink the tumor or chemotherapy and radiation in concert. Chemotherapy is something that is recommended especially when there is substantial spread since it will slow the growth even if it can’t cure. in many advanced stages it is known to prolong life.

Prognosis

The prognosis is very subjective to each patient. it will depend on both the stage of the cancer as well as the overall health of the individual. Generally speaking the prognosis is very poor. the prognosis is only going to get worse the further the lung cancer spreads going outside of the chest wall or if it has started to involve the lymph nodes.

Surgery or radiation is the only way that can cure the cancer assuming the entire tumor can be removed. the unfortunate reality though is that most lung cancers are diagnosed when they are at the stage where it is not possible.

For those that are diagnosed with adenocarcinoma only approximately 17% of those people will live for more than 5 years after their diagnosis.

Early and Late Signs of Lung Cancer http://lung-cancer-info.com/early-and-late-signs-of-lung-cancer/ http://lung-cancer-info.com/early-and-late-signs-of-lung-cancer/#comments Wed, 28 Oct 2009 13:02:52 +0000 Frank http://www.lung-cancer-info.com/?p=518

As with most cancers, the earlier you sense lung cancer the better your odds of survival. In fact, when it’s caught in the 1st stages, there’s a nearly 50% survival rate after 5 years. This is an extraordinary number considering the proven fact that overall, lung cancer has only a 15% survival rate.

And that’s why being privy to the indications of lung cancer can imply the difference between surviving and becoming a statistic.
The Early Signs

from the early signs of lung cancer can easily be mistaken for other conditions, it’s frequently hard to take them seriously. It’s time to concentrate.
Lung cancer symptoms are often related to the location of the abrasions, which settle into the tissues of the lung first. That’s why the early signs tend to reflect common cold, influenza, and bronchial illnesses. Once the cancer moves beyond the bronchia, new symptoms arise.

The Later Signs

As an example, if the malignancy has spread to the brain, then common signs might include vision problems, stroke, and migraines. As you can see, these are serious symptoms that might be related to any quantity of sicknesses.

in addition, signs such as depression, weight loss, fatigue, shoulder discomfort, difficulty swallowing, and hoarseness should be regarded seriously.
When To See A Doctor

This is particularly right if you have been a smoker or are presently smoking, or if you’ve ever had exposure to asbestos over a long-lasting period.
Here are the signs that should provoke action :

- Unexplained loss of weight

- determined shortness of breath

- mulish breathing infections that keep coming back

- discomfort in your chest

- Fatigue ( again, if it has no obvious cause )

The point to remember is that your immune system is busy fighting the disease.
Conclusion

there is a proviso, unfortunately. Nearly a quarter of the people diagnosed with lung cancer never experience any symptoms in the slightest. So while these lung cancer signs can serve as red flags, their absence doesn’t mean everything is absolutely fine. Another reason to see your GP for a yearly check up.
